[statesman.com] In Texas, working poor families struggle to get ahead
By Brenda Bell
Published: 10:43 p.m. Saturday, June 16, 2012
Back in 2005, a lifetime ago, Alona Smith was working random jobs as a security guard and taking classes at Austin Community College when she became pregnant. As the dutiful daughter of a single mom, a latchkey kid who had basically raised her own baby sister, she knew too well what lay ahead....

AUSTIN, TEX. -- The college “completion agenda” has helped community colleges face facts about where they fall short. But if the focus on completion gets too singular, two-year colleges run the risk of neglecting student access and even the quality of learning on their campuses.

meningitis immunization
Administrators estimate that as many as 10,000 students will not be allowed to enroll in classes next semester because they haven't fulfilled the immunization requirement.
Please share this information with your students:
ACC10000.com
Write it on the chalkboard or whiteboard before class. Please let the students know.
If those 10,000 students do not fulfill the state-mandated requirement, then they will be left out in the cold. They will not have affordable access to high-quality higher education.

Distance Learning Committee meeting update
Colleagues,
Just wanted to update you about recent Distance Learning Committee outcomes.
In our March 30, 2012 meeting the following outcomes that would directly be of interest to you and our departments are the following:
Because of SACS’ mandate, all accredited college distance learning professors must undergo a formal distance learning training program before being eligible to teach said courses.
Prior to this date, ACC has not had a formalized training program for prospective distance learning faculty. Our only instruction was through Blackboard specific operational training.
Susan Thomason and her department have developed a 4 module instructional series for on-line distance learning professors. At this date, the program is in the process of being reviewed and edited.
Each of the four 1 hour on-line modules should be up and operational on or before the end of April 2012. When available, faculty will be notified to register.
In order to continue to teach - or to initially begin teaching - an on-line class, all distance learning faculty will be required to complete all 4 modules of the series prior to the SACS visit and evaluation in October of 2012.
As I have more information, I will pass that on to you.
Best regards,
Phylis Davis Molina - Business Studies

What You (Really) Need to Know
By LAWRENCE H. SUMMERS
A PARADOX of American higher education is this: The expectations of leading universities do much to define what secondary schools teach, and much to establish a template for what it means to be an educated man or woman. College campuses are seen as the source for the newest thinking and for the generation of new ideas, as society’s cutting edge.
And the world is changing very rapidly. Think social networking, gay marriage, stem cells or the rise of China. Most companies look nothing like they did 50 years ago. Think General Motors, AT&T or Goldman Sachs.
Yet undergraduate education changes remarkably little over time....
